Glenn 1957 Glenn L Cole.jpg (45895 bytes)L. Cole, age 83, of 3920 Braddock Road High Point and Winter Haven, Florida died Wednesday, January 3, 2006 in the Hospice Home at High Point. A native of Stanley County, Mr. Cole was born February 17th, 1923 in Albemarle a son to the late George Edgar Cole and the late Nora Burton Cole. He had been a resident of High Point for 60 years and for the past 12 years he and his wife have retained a home in Florida where they enjoyed the winter months. For over 37 years he was an Insurance Agent with Pilot Life Insurance Company and he was a member of Deep River Friends Meeting. An Avid golfer, he was an active member of the Pleasant Ridge Senior Golf Association until his health forced him to quit playing in late August 2006. During his golfing career he recorded two "Hole in Ones". He was a past North Carolina State Checkers Champion and was an accomplished Duplicate Bridge player. During retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling. On December 23rd, 1943 he was married to the former Wanda Smith, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Laura Cole Cox and her husband Larry of Chesapeake, Virginia; a son Scott Smith Cole and his wife Maria of Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico; one sister, Peggy Cole Williamson and her husband Carl of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, Stashia Mezzapeso, Chad Clifton Cox, Jeffery David Cox, Jennifer Cox Werbinski, Christopher Scott Cox and David Tyler Cox and Six Great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday in Deep River Friends Meeting House with the Rev. Scott A. Wagoner officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 PM at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive.

Glenn Cole's wife Mrs. Wanda Cole donated a copy of Chess & Checkers - The Way To Mastership by Edward  Lasker which will be added to the Burlington Checker Club Library.

Glenn Cole's father Ed Cole, George  Bean, and James Paul Lewis played in this 1957 NC State Tourney which Glenn won in Winston-Salem according to Dr. John Webster. Webster said Glenn Cole was also a mail player.  Laura Cox, daughter of Glenn Cole sent me these pictures of a checkerboard table she inherited from her father that was made by her grandfather Ed Cole.   Checkerboard Table
